Inverness : Mostly Men, Crown Church Hall |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (25 of 164) |
||
What is it? It is a chance for, well, men mostly to meet for a blether over a drink at one of the pubs near the church. Sometimes we talk about weighty matters of religion or state but other times….we don’t. So as to avoid accusations of excess, we meet just once a month. There are no membership duties. Just turn up. The drink is Basically Beer, it must be said, but in a flood of political correctness, a Strong Sparkling water is quite in order. On the last Thursday of the month. Originally conceived as an opportunity for fellowship for men on the fringes of the church and to give them a chance to get to know the minister better, it still has that aim but the membership is now as varied as the numbers, anything from three to thirteen currently. How hard it is to avoid the M word, membership! There is no membership of Mostly Men. You just turn up.

For anyone who has cancer, or is caring for someone with cancer. Stress prevention through Tai Chi & Qi Gong Tai Chi and Qi Gong exercises help relaxation. To relax is to conserve energy. Tai Chi and Qi Gong use a well balanced interplay of tension and release that is usually associated with general well-being and emotional stability. From motion you obtain serenity and stability by the release of tension through the continuous shifting of weight from one foot to the other. Traditional Chinese medical theory is the basis of the specific Qi Gong exercises. A typical session starts with practicing the routine (either seated or standing depending upon the individual physical condition) to soft music which takes approximately 10 minutes. The bulk of the session is spent explaining the movements of the routine along with how and why they are helpful and then the session is normally closed by performing the exercise routine once more.

Highlands & Islands Branch activity currently takes the form of a series of meetings, Shows and Conventions where you can hear interesting talks by experts. You can see a wide variety of plants in the 'Plant of the Month' and see, and hear, how to grow them. Branch meetings are also an excellent way of acquiring good plants which members bring in to make room in their collections for new stock. In summer there are visits to members' greenhouses and nurseries, both locally and as far away as Oban and Aberdeen. The Cactus House at Floral Hall is looked after by Branch members and anyone who would like to be involved would be very welcome. One of the main attractions of doing so is that one is actively involved on a larger scale than is possible in one's own greenhouse; for example, working on a 20 foot Euphorbia with a 4 inch trunk! There is also the social aspect of working with others.

The club has an outdoor and indoor range as well as a clubhouse. The club can provide access to all the equipment that is needed to take up .22 target shooting - rifles, ammunition, shooting jackets, gloves etc, together with basic training. Membership of a rifle club is governed by a strict set of laws so club address is not shown. Before attending the club to shoot (or handling any weapons in the club) you require a police check. So prior to attending the club they need to know who you are, and to send off a form to the local Police Firearms Unit. If you want to visit the club with a view to becoming a member please send an email including your postal address and - if possible - a land-line telephone number that can be validated via directory enquiries - on your first contact. On receipt they will send you a link to a web-form that collects the necessary infomation to complete the application.

Highland Disabled Ramblers is a small charity run by volunteers, to enable people with mobility problems to access the countryside in a safe and companionable way. We organise a programme of leisurely monthly rambles of 3 to 4 miles leaving from different places locally on different days of the week, within a radius of 40 miles of Inverness. (Please click on the link to go to our website for the list of rambles for this year and the days of the week on which the rambles take place.) Members book scooters in advance, which we transport to the start of each ramble, but they must make their own way to the start. Volunteers ensure the safety of members and provide companionship along the way. Membership is open to anyone over 18 years. Anyone requiring assistance needs to bring a family member, friend or carer as we do not have qualified carers. Volunteer van drivers and walking companions are most welcome (references reqd.).
